Graphic Design in Context
I think the concept of this book is really interesting. The author wants to take the idea of typeface as a written form and all of the old traditions and propel them forward into the world of technology and new reading environments. I also like the fact that the book illuminates the readers potential for creativity. The history of creating and classifying typefaces is really interesting. It reminds me that in a world that is so overexposed, it is increasingly more difficult to classify and to create original typefaces. The digital world opened up the ability to change typefaces much more readily. I think it's interesting that Robert Bringhurst stated that type design is an art not a science. There is an emotive quality to the letters and the way they communicate that we simply can't ignore. The principles of design are to use these intricate tools to communicate to the viewer.
